“The
perfect computer program is essentially a collection of solved failures”
Words of
Benjamin Young in a conversation about the importance of failure. Since failure
is always present in creative work it is our contention that failure is not
reason for punishment or demotion.
Organizations that intend to grow and improve can take a lesson here.
This
principal runs head on into the mindset of some managers. They have been
trained to fire workers who try out new things that cost budget dollars with no
immediate improvement in production.
This is
comparable to an agricultural firm that does no experimentation with plants
that need to adjust to changing conditions. That company will go out of
business.
Mr. Young is
at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio. He also says that in computer
science, trying and failing is the only way to determine if one is right.
I challenge
the reader to examine their own situation.
This principle is about to receive increased attention.
